NEAT! What the heck is NEAT?
It stands for Non- Exercise Activity Thermogenesis .. it’s a bit of a mouth full, hence the acronym.
Believe it or not, this little word is going to play a pretty huge role in your overall body composition.
NEAT is the activity you do on a daily basis. People underestimate how many calories get burnt from general walking, walking up the stairs, making yourself a cup of tea, doing the laundry. Its common to think that the only time you are burning calories is when you are at the gym or out for a run.
For example, a person that works as a builder is going to have a much higher NEAT than somebody that works at a desk. Make sense? They will be expending more calories throughout the day because their job is more physical.
Make a conscious effort to increase your NEAT-
Take the stairs instead of the lift.
Walk/cycle instead of driving
Get out for a walk at lunchtime or in the evening.
If you know that you’re going to be making a long phone call, stand up and walk around while chatting.
You get the point!
There are a few ways to track your NEAT-I personally wear a fit bit which allows me to track the number of steps I have taken per day! I always aim for the 10k goal! (this isn’t an advert for Fitbit )
Try it! Increase your daily activity just slightly each day and you’ll be surprised at how much more quickly you can hit your goals!
